El príncipe de Gales es, desde 1301, el título del heredero de los monarcas británicos. La tradición la inició Eduardo I de Inglaterra en 1301 que dio este título a su hijo, el príncipe Eduardo (posteriormente Eduardo II de Inglaterra) después de la anexión del País de Gales por Inglaterra, a través del Estatuto de Rhuddlan.
The Prince of Wales is, since 1301, the title of heir to the British monarchs. The tradition was started by Edward I of England in 1301 that gave the title to his son, Prince Edward (later Edward II of England) after the annexation of Wales by England, through the Statute of Rhuddlan.
Según una famosa leyenda, los galeses conquistados por la corona inglesa le piden a su nuevo rey "un príncipe de sangre real, que hubiese nacido en Gales y que no hablara una palabra de inglés ni francés". Eduardo I nombró a su hijo recién nacido como príncipe para sorpresa de los galeses. Eduardo II realmente nació en Caernarfon, Gales, mientras su padre luchaba allí, y como todo recién nacido "no hablaba". Además, al crecer en la corte es probable que su primer idioma fuera el francés normando y no el inglés.
Los británicos actuales han visto cómo el Principe Carlos fue investido príncipe de Gales en una ceremonia en el castillo de Caernarfon saliendo a saludar al balcón del Castillo.

Edward I named her newborn child as a prince to the surprise of the Welsh. Edward II was actually born in Caernarfon, Wales, while his father fought there, and like any newborn "he didn't talk". Also, growing up in court is likely that his first language was Norman French and not English.
Current British have seen Prince Charles was invested as Prince of Wales at a ceremony at Caernarfon Castle out the balcony to greet the Castle.
